Frequently Asked Questions

  • The best way to find out is to have a conversation - with myself, and with some other coaches.

I offer a free 30-minute intro call with no obligation, it's a chance to talk about what you're dealing with and whether coaching, and a particular coach, will work for you.

You'll know pretty quickly whether it feels useful - and if you’re speaking to someone you want to work with.

One thing to flag - you get out of coaching what you put into it. It’s not like doing a course where you turn up and you get fed all the content (which is great for learning generic skills).

That means - being clear about what you want to get out of it; committing to work between sessions; and being clear about what you want to get out of a particular session

This is why, incidentally, the initial proposal and kick off session are so important. Even though things will change along the way, it’s always important to remember why we started this and what you'want to get out of it.

  • I’ll give you a personalised quote based on your specific needs after we speak, but my preferred way of working is an agreed price for a 3 or 6 monthly package, that includes fortnightly sessions.

This also includes ad hoc support when needed during the period (ranging from an email / text exchange, to an extra session if you need to prepare for, say, a big meeting).

I tend not to simply charge by the hour - as I’ve found that constructive coaching relationships depend on a bit more flexibility on both sides (for example, I’ve often found it useful to speak with a client’s peers, or their manager…I see that as part of the coaching service not additional ‘billable hours’).

  • If you mean ‘I’m a PM/ Senior PM’ job hunting right now and need some help rewriting my CV and preparing for interviews’ - then I’m probably not the coach for you.

If you’re more senior, and what you’re thinking about is how best to position yourself for your next role or general career advancement - then very possibly

Why do I say this? Simply because I’ve been away from the PM and Senior PM recruitment market for too long, and everything is changing rapidly in this AI focused world. I have lots of advice to give, but your money is better spent with a specialist here.

For Directors, VPs, and CPOs - I have a much more recent grasp, both on what’s looked for in a recruitment business, and for the things you need to be doing now to help you land the job / promotion you want in 1 - 2 years’ time.

  • No, I’m very happy to help anyone in and around a product team: Product Designers, Senior Engineers; Project/ Program managers; and General managers who are now taking responsiblity of a Product Team.

For all roles though my speciality remains the same - which is really helping you lead product activity effectively, when youre core product skills aren’t going to be enough to get you where you want to go.

  • Through our initial conversation (you can book one here), I’d start to get a sense of what you’re looking to get from coaching.

I then send you a proposal that covers objectives, overall approach and, yes, cost.

If you lke the proposal I send over we’d start with a 90 minute kick off session, so we can go a bit deeper on your needs, and experience to date.

At this stage, it can also sometimes be helpful (if appropriate) to talk with your manager, and/or other peers/ senior leaders where you work (this is included in your package…)

We’d then move to regular sessions - normally fortnightly - where we’d be following a number of running themes/ changes you’re looking to make (eg: getting more from your team; dealing with challenging exec meetings); and/or tackle topical issues that have cropped up.

Within this broad framework however, there’s plenty of ability to flex according to your needs. This is exactly why it makes sense to speak to both me, and other coaches before you start in order to find the best fit for you.

  • One of the best bits of wisdom passed down at Amazon was ‘people often obsess about what’s changing over the next 10 years, but real competitive advantage comes from understanding what is going to remain the same.’

AI is already changing how we work, the products we can build, and how we build them. There’s a huge amount of noise about every twist and turn on this journey.

But some things persist. And the right approach to AI is to think how it can best help you solve some of these perennial problems, such as..

No matter what product you build, or how you build it - it’s there to deliver an outcome for our business.

There’s never a guarantee that what you build it going to be successful.

You will always have more ideas about things we can build than resource to build them.

There will always be noise: data, opinions, competitor activity - that will inform your decision over what to build, but won’t make the decision for you.

  • That’s actually the most common way of working, when I’m helping someone develop their leadership skills.

I would say this - but if you have a personal allowance for development, coaching can often be by far the most effective way to invest it - it means you get something that is personalised to you and can adapt to your needs over time.

  • Just get in touch via the contact page; or go ahead and book a 30 minute intro call.

  • Hopefully that won’t happen, but if it does - then we’ll talk about it.

I’m very focussed on making sure you get what you need to achieve your goals - and in the very few cases I’ve had where a client has felt things aren’t working for them, a quick conversation and slight change of approach has resolved everything.
